The Department of Speciality Chemical Technology (formerly Department of Dyestuff Technology) at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai, is one of India’s oldest and leading centres for education, research, and technology development in dyes, pigments, functional colorants, speciality chemicals, and modern organic process technologies. Established in 1944 under the visionary leadership of Prof. K. Venkataraman, the Department has made significant contributions to the development of India’s colourant and speciality chemicals industry.
Over eight decades, eminent academicians including Prof. B. D. Tilak, Prof. S. V. Sunthankar, Prof. S. Seshadri, Prof. D. W. Rangnekar, Prof. V. R. Kanetkar, Prof. P. M. Bhate, and Prof. N. Sekar have built a strong legacy of academic and research excellence. Under the leadership of Prof. G. S. Shankarling, the Department is advancing its focus on functional colourants, advanced materials, OLEDs, laser dyes, pigments, graphene-based materials, flame-retardant materials, perfumery chemicals, process intensification, green chemistry, and sustainable speciality chemicals.
The Department has educated more than 1,000 undergraduate and 500 postgraduate students, many of whom hold distinguished positions in industry, academia and research organisations worldwide. Its notable alumni include Mr. N. K. Parekh, Mr. K. L. Rathi, Dr. S. K. Bhumgara, Mr. Parag Zaveri and Mr. Siddarth Sikchi.
A major milestone has been the establishment of a modern laboratory facility, supported by M/s Colourtex Industries Pvt. Ltd., providing advanced infrastructure for research, process intensification, analytical studies and instrumentation.
The Department has a strong record of technology development and industrial translation, including laser dyes for uranium isotope separation, solar-grade pigments and coatings, polycarbonate lens coloration, graphene-based flame-retardant materials, and advanced functional colorants. Its research has resulted in patents, publications, technology transfers, and collaborations with industry and strategic organizations.
The Department also actively promotes global scientific and industrial interaction through the International Convention on Colorants (COC), organised in collaboration with the Dyes & Pigments Manufacturers Association of India (DPMAI). The Convention serves as an important platform for academia, industry and young researchers to exchange knowledge and explore emerging developments in colourants, advanced materials and sustainable technologies.
