About the East Asia Symposium on Functional Dyes and Advanced Materials (EAS)

The East Asia Symposium on Functional Dyes and Advanced Materials (EAS) is an international scientific forum that promotes research collaboration and knowledge exchange in functional dyes, colorants, pigments, and advanced materials.

The East Asia Symposium on Functional Dyes and Advanced Materials (EAS) is an international scientific forum that promotes research collaboration and knowledge exchange in functional dyes, colorants, pigments, and advanced materials.

Established in 2003, EAS was jointly initiated by the Kinka Chemical Society, Japan, and the Taiwan Dyestuffs and Pigments Industrial Association (TDPIA), Taiwan. The first symposium was held in Osaka through the vision and efforts of Prof. Hiroyuki Nakazumi, who played a pivotal role in bringing together academic and industrial communities in East Asia.

Since its establishment, EAS has developed into an important biennial platform for researchers, scientists, engineers, and industrial professionals to share scientific discoveries, technological developments, and practical applications. Initially focused on cooperation among Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and China, the symposium has gradually expanded its international participation. India became an active partner with the hosting of EAS8 in Kerala in 2017.

Over the past two decades, EAS has been hosted in Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China, and India, building a strong tradition of scientific excellence, interdisciplinary cooperation, and international friendship. The symposium connects universities, research institutes, and industries and encourages long-term partnerships across Asia and beyond.

The scientific scope of EAS continues to evolve with advances in materials science and technology. Major topics include:

  • Functional dyes, pigments, and colorants
  • Optical, photoelectric, and photonic materials
  • Organic electronics, semiconductors, OLEDs, and photovoltaics
  • Sensors, imaging, and energy-related materials
  • Functional polymers, nanomaterials, and biomaterials
  • Catalysis, sustainable materials, and green chemistry

As the world moves toward carbon neutrality, digital transformation, and sustainable development, functional materials are becoming increasingly important in energy, electronics, healthcare, environmental technologies, and smart manufacturing. EAS provides a valuable platform for presenting cutting-edge research and strengthening cooperation between academia and industry.

The 13th East Asia Symposium on Functional Dyes and Advanced Materials (EAS13) will be held in Mumbai, India, on January 28–29, 2027, jointly organized by the Conference of Colorants (COC) and the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai. Following EAS8 in Kerala, this will be the second EAS hosted in India and will further strengthen scientific collaboration between India and East Asian countries.

EAS remains committed to connecting academia and industry, promoting scientific excellence, and building lasting international partnerships in functional dyes and advanced materials.
